Sa Lee is a direct daughter of our much loved "Trailrunners Lee" and has inherited many similarities to him(See below) Well proportioned with an intense desire to retrieve and work, she is a tall, strong, female at about 65lbs. Sa Lee is well trained in obedience and field work, and will work for anyone, but she is self assured and will make sure you know what you're doing before you can tell her what to do. We love this quality in her, she is very honest and no nonsense. She is not a cuddly dog by nature, but she is very kind and gentle around puppies and children. She is most highly motivated by retrieving, even over praise and food.
Sa Lee is an absolutely outstanding mother, and we have been blessed to have her be a part of our breeding program. From whelping to weaning, she independently organizes her puppies, and meticulously cares for their every need. We have seen in how she carefully raises them, they learn from her, and grow to be very secure and self confident dogs themselves. Her pups are energetic and lively, but also very balanced, calm, intelligent, "thinking" dogs.
Tenko (Japanese for 'yellow') is an attractive, finer boned (60lb) male with a terrific nose. His grandfather, Cruise, was a cancer detection dog we imported from Japan to diversify our breeding and complement our hunting dogs' abilities. Several of Tenko's siblings and offspring have gone on to be detection trained as well. Under our area of expertise, Tenko was trained as a retriever, and the detection drive translated well to hunting up birds in the field. He is an independent, but friendly, dog, and has inherited an 'on/off' switch from his grandmother Brit, and mother Glide. Meaning he can easily go from motivated on the job to very relaxed in the home.
Tenko passes on his friendly demeanour to his offspring with Sa Lee, which helps to balance some of her "business like" qualities. Many of their pups have gone on to be wonderful family, casual hunting, and service/support companions, but some individuals in each litter are much more independent and self directed. Those pups we ensure are placed in rigorous working homes, where we have seen them thrive as detection, sport, and working hunting dogs.
Grandfather of the pups, Lee
Trailrunners Oakley Breezes By (Lee), Sa Lee's Sire. His sire, Roary, was one of Trailrunners' founding stud dogs. Lee was beloved by all, a big, long in the leg, strong teddy bear of a dog who loved retrieving geese. He was happy to work for anybody and went on many hunts (a favourite hunting dog to be borrowed). He loved to please, making him very trainable, and a gentleman to live with.
Sibling of the father, Shoko Ki
This is Trailrunners Shoko Ki, sister to Tenko, a detection dog working for a Canadian City Police force as a cadaver detection dog. Other siblings have also gone into detection work, become great companions and also superb hunting dogs.
Sa Lee & Tenko Previous Litters
This is a repeat breeding, we have been very pleased with the temperments and instincts of this pairing in the past. Pups from previous litters have excellent noses and drive, and have become great hunting, detection, and active companion dogs. They tend towards being energetic but with even, self confident temperaments. Some pups have matured around the 65lb mark and some at 50lbs. Many are stamped with Tenko's attractive face and head, and Sa Lee's gorgeous, soft ears. We've had many pups from previous Sa Lee x Tenko litters return for training, and all have been very smart, motivated, and eager for a job (anything from retrieving birds all day, to becoming a marathon running buddy, or even simply just being a participant in active family life).
Current Litter
Welcome to the world, little one! This black female was the firstborn of this litter. 2 more black females, and 2 yellow males followed.
Bonding time under the heatlamp. Momma Sa Lee wants everybody where she can see them.
Growing slowly but steadily day by day
Eat, snuggle, sleep is the only checklist at this stage. Very soon their eyes will begin to open, and a whole world of possibilities opens up!
Sa Lee & Tenko very consistently have had a fairly even ratio of black and beautiful light yellow pups in each of their litters.
Could it be some peekaboo blue eyes I see?
At just 2 weeks old, Sa Lee's pups are still pretty milk drunk, but they are now on their feet with wobbly legs. Eyes are wide, and ears slowly opening. We are excited to get to know them as they grow.
Check back in, we will share more pictures as they grow.
